The owner of the garage who is my dad's friend also added he's going to bring me up another bottle of oil this weekend What oil are you guys using - regardless of what BMW say I just want to know.
Any body tried mixing up oils on purpose? Yeah I read about Millers however, I'm worried their might be additives which may cause harm to the engine? I'm just wondering why BMW recommended 0w I wouldn't worry about it taking 7 litres rather than 8 either. Its pretty normal. Ok cool guys thanks for the input. What's the difference in the grades here. So I'm assuming 0w30 is very thin oil from what Tej is saying. What's the difference in 0w40? Even thinner? And 5w30 is slightly thicker? I rung BMW myself today and they said they recommend 0w30 for most cars and 10w60 for all the M cars.
My old E34 M5 used to use some really thick oil. If the oil wasn't warmed up and you started booting it about it'd chuck out the oil outta the exhaust. As long as you use good quality oil millers, valvoline, mobil etc you won't have any problems just try and get a good deal on price and go from there.
Mine is running 5w at the moment. I want to try 5w or 0w next time. In my old M50 I used Mobil 1 0w for many years. But yes - any good brand, the right spec of course, and 0w, 5w, 0w, 5w are all sensible choices. I think I'm right in saying that the 40 should be very slightly thicker when the engine is hot, so the engine might run a little quieter if it is higher mileage.
Fuel economy might be very slightly worse I'm told, but maybe not measurably so. Maybe I'm reading too far between the lines, but it seems BMW recommend thicker oil in the M cars for better protection, and thinner oil in normal cars to increase MPG.
I wouldn't worry too much, the hot rating will be more than sufficient to protect a diesel which will never see a track day in its life 0w30 is a little thin for my liking, but at the same time I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Great info guys - I think I'll try thicker oils next time. Not too bothered about MPG as its pretty good as it is.
Thanks again!!! Which ever grade you go for make sure it's low ash spec otherwise it wall cause issues with the dpf. I'm about to do an oil and filter change on my D Fancy trying Millers but have always been fine in past cars with Castrol too. So this You need to be a member in order to leave a comment.
