Professor Dumbledore sent Hagrid in search of other Giants. When he came back to Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge visited Hagrid's hut to ask Hagrid where he had been and to him ask what sort of mission he had been sent on. As Umbridge had a strong dislike of Half-breeds , including Half-giants , she wanted to sack Hagrid from Hogwarts.

Umbridge succeeded in doing so when she became headmistress replacing Prof. Dumbledore as Headmaster. Near the end of the school year, Hagrid was forcibly removed from the Hogwarts grounds by Umbridge with the assistance of some corrupt Ministry of Magic Aurors , including John Dawlish.

In , Hagrid's pet Acromantula Aragog died of ill health. Hagrid held a funeral for Aragog outside his hut, which was attended by himself, Harry Potter, Horace Slughorn and Fang. Slughorn did a eulogy for Aragog and buried him in the earth, and afterwards they all went inside and drank some alcohol. Harry, who was under the influence of Felix Felicis , also managed to successfully persuade Slughorn to give him his memory of Slughorn informing a young Tom Riddle about Horcruxes.

Before the end of the — school year , Death Eaters managed to penetrate the walls of Hogwarts Castle , with the help of Draco Malfoy. After he cast the Killing Curse on Professor Dumbledore, Harry chased him and the Death Eaters, who were now joined by Draco Malfoy, until they reached the grounds outside of the castle. Hagrid was forced to rescue his dog Fang who had been trapped inside the hut.

The Death Eaters then disapparated. Hagrid's Hut was repaired after the fire. During the — school year , in which Hogwarts was under the control of the Death Eaters , Hagrid held a "Support Harry Potter" party in his hut which forced him into hiding. There is only one room inside, with hams and pheasants hanging from the ceiling.

There is also a fireplace where, most of the time, a copper kettle is used to boil water. In the corner stands a massive bed with a patchwork quilt over it. Needless to say, Lucius made it until the final group of Slughorn's most prized students. He said that he was a fan of what Alan Rickman did with Snape's voice in the first Harry Potter film and wanted to attempt to create something as iconic.

Isaacs explained that he once had a teacher in drama school who made it clear that he didn't like him. As a sort of retribution, Isaacs used his voice as the base for Lucius Malfoy's character. To add a more unique quality to his voice, he added in a snobby tone that a British art critic used.

He wanted to do this for two reasons. Firstly, Dumbledore was appointed as Headmaster of Hogwarts, which angered Lucius due to his secret allegiance to Voldemort and Dumbledore's relaxed attitude on Wizard and Muggle relations. Secondly, Lucius wanted Draco to go to Durmstrang due to having a camaraderie with the Headmaster there, Igor Karkaroff.

Karkaroff was captured but was pardoned due to handing over information to the Ministry. Although Lucius almost did send Draco to Durmstrang, his wife, Narcissa, stopped this from happening as she didn't want her son so far away. Harry Potter fans who were just into the movies and never read the books were a little confused about where Lucius Malfoy went between Order of the Phoenix and The Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Although it was briefly mentioned in The Half-Blood Prince, it wasn't explicitly clear that Lucius was sent to Azkaban. At least, it wasn't as clear as it was in the books. After the failed attempt to retrieve Harry's prophecy, all of the Death Eaters present at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, with the exception of Bellatrix, were caught.

Voldemort was angry with all of them for their failure so he let them rot in jail for more than a year before he decided to break them out. Even though Lucius Malfoy actually wanted Draco to go to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts, he still took an active role in his son's education at the school. This is mainly because he was highly against Albus Dumbledore's relaxed opinions on Wizard-Muggle relations. Knowing that Dumbledore would lead his staff to teach these more progressive and inclusive ideologies, Lucius joined the Board of Governors in order to have some sway over the school.

He probably caused a lot of anxiety for other parents as well as the students and staff. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , thanks in part to his relationship with the Minister of Magic, Lucius temporary got Dumbledore kicked out of his position.

However, thanks to Harry, as well as others, Dumbledore was reinstated. Although it's spoken about in previous Harry Potter installments, we don't get to see Malfoy Manor until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where it's used as the base of operations for Voldemort, as well as a place where his most loyal followers stayed, including Wormtail and Bellatrix Lestrange. Malfoy Manor was actually passed down to Lucius through a lineage that dates back to when his ancestors arrived in Britain with William the Conqueror and the rest of the invading Norman Army.

This is something that was explored throughout the Harry Potter book series, and referenced in the movies, especially in a deleted scene from The Chamber of Secrets.

However, after the downfall of Lord Voldemort, Lucius had to sell a number of these items to Borgin and Burkes because Arthur Weasley and the Ministry were raiding the homes of people they thought might possess magical objects that could cause harm.

Although a lot of his items were kept in Malfoy Manor's cellar, Lucius needed to keep his hands clean in order to continue to prove that he wasn't a supporter of Voldemort. Lucius Malfoy didn't just have influence at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he also had his hands in the Ministry of Magic as well.

This was a learned trait from his father, Abraxas Malfoy, who also made sure he had influence with the Ministry of Magic. This included a personal relationship with the Minister himself, much like how Lucius had a friendship with Cornelius Fudge that he used against both Harry and Dumbledore on a few different occasions.

His "ins" with people high up in the Ministry also came in handy for Voldemort in both the First and Second Wizarding Wars. Abraxas Malfoy was also suspected of taking part in the premature retirement of Nobby Leach, the first Muggle-born Minister of Magic, who was forced to resign after contracting a mysterious illness.

Another trait that Lucius Malfoy has is that he likes to throw around money if it gets him what he wants. And one of the things he's always wanted is for his son to succeed in everything possible. This is both because he cared for his son, and also cared for the reputation of the Malfoy name. An example of Lucius using his money as a powerful tool was when he bought the entire Slytherin Quidditch team Nimbus s; the most expensive and fastest broomstick on the market at that time.

Cornelius Fudge refuses to believe this, saying that Malfoy was an old, established Wizarding family, and had always donated to all the right charities. As usual, Arthur and Lucius exchange heated words, ended by Lucius excusing himself to Fudge's office; evidently Lucius is there to make another donation to some worthy cause.

When Sirius Black accompanies Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the train station to see them off to Hogwarts, his Animagus dog form is recognized by Lucius Malfoy, who apparently passes this information on to Draco. This suspicion is strengthened by a story Hermione finds in the Daily Prophet a week later, suggesting that Sirius had been spotted in London. Harry later has one of his disturbing dreams, in which he seems to be looking through Voldemort's eyes.

In this one, he is speaking to one Rookwood , who Harry later recognizes as a recent escapee from Azkaban Prison. Rookwood tells him that Avery's plan could never have worked, which is why Bode had fought so hard when Lucius had put him under the Imperius curse. Discussing this dream the next day, Harry remembers that Lucius had been hanging around near the entrance to the Department of Mysteries, where Bode worked, on the day of his hearing.

Hermione remembers that Sturgis Podmore had been arrested on the day that they had all left Grimmauld Place for school, and speculates that Lucius may have placed him under the Imperius curse to try and get Podmore to steal whatever it was that Voldemort was after. Lucius is one of the Death Eaters, and apparently the leader, in the battle at the Ministry. Lucius is the spokesman of the group of twelve Death Eaters that surround Harry and try to convince him to hand over the Prophecy, and is the one who reins in Bellatrix when she threatens Harry directly.

Once Harry and his friends escape from the Death Eaters, Lucius instructs them to split into pairs to search the Department, pairing himself with Mulciber ; however, we do not see either of them during the chase. He later recovers and has a brief duel with Harry before Remus Lupin intervenes and begins dueling him.

Judging by the fact that we do not see him again, and Remus appears a few seconds later, we believe that Lucius lost the duel. Following the battle he is arrested and taken to Azkaban.

Draco blames Harry for Lucius' arrest, and is prepared to curse Harry in retaliation, but is interrupted by the arrival of Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall. Lucius has been convicted of being a Death Eater following the Battle at the Ministry in the previous year, and sentenced to Azkaban Prison. As such, we don't actually see him in this book.

When we first see Lucius in this volume, he is at a council of Death Eaters, which has been convened in Voldemort's new headquarters, Malfoy Manor. He, with his wife Narcissa and son Draco, are seated far down the table, distant from Voldemort, as a sign of their decreased status within the organization. Much to her dismay, Bellatrix is seated near them.

It would appear that the Malfoy family is in disgrace: Lucius had first lost the Diary Horcrux , and then bungled the battle at the Ministry and been sent to Azkaban, and now was essentially under house arrest in his own home. Draco had performed half of his mission but then funked the second half, the previous year. And Narcissa had broken the rule about talking with other Death Eaters about missions, not only with Draco, but with Severus Snape. Voldemort, having determined that he likely would be unable to defeat Harry using his own wand, demands that Lucius give him his wand, as he won't be needing one.

He taunts Lucius' apparent brief hope that it would be a trade. To test the power of Lucius' wand, Voldemort uses it to kill Charity Burbage.

The attempt fails, however, with Harry's wand, apparently all on its own, sending out a burst of golden fire that causes Lucius' wand to shatter. Summoned by Lucius, Narcissa is unable to identify Harry, and orders Draco to look; Draco is also uncertain.

Bellatrix by and large takes charge of proceedings at this point and Lucius retreats into the background. At the battle of Hogwarts, Hermione calls on Harry to find out where Voldemort is.

Harry senses that he is in the Shrieking Shack; a hang-dog Lucius is with him. Lucius is asking after Draco, his son. Voldemort replies that he should have left the school and joined him with the other Slytherins.

Lucius asks him to stop the battle, so that he can be sure to kill Potter himself. Voldemort says that this is simply an attempt by Lucius to save his son, and sends Lucius to find Snape.

When Harry returns to the forest to face Voldemort and his destiny, Lucius is present, though far away from the center of the gathering. His last appearance is in the Great Hall, after the battle.
